The Sabah state legislative assembly today rejected a motion to debate the Sultanate of Sulu 'heirs' issue submitted by Opposition leader Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal.

The claims of the heirs of the Sulu Sultanate over Sabah will never be acknowledged as Sabahans have chosen to be part of Malaysia, the Sabah state legislative assembly sitting was told today.

Abidin said the proposal would be brought to the state assembly in future if all assemblymen agree to amend the state constitution.

Masidi said he would not be lenient in safeguarding Sabah's interests to ensure that the state was entitled to benefit from its gas and oil.

All the 741 polling centres for the 73 Sabah State Legislative Assembly seats in the 16th state election closed at 5 pm today.

"I was reluctant to dissolve the DUN but I had to do it for the sake of the people and I hope the people will make the right choice later."

The dissolution of the Sabah State Legislative Assembly to pave the way for a state election is a good way to resolve the political uncertainties in the state, two political analysts said.

According to Article 21 (4) of the Sabah State Constitution, the state election has to be held within 60 days of the date of dissolution.

Earlier, Mohd Shafie had an audience with Tun Juhar at Istana Negeri here, and a vehicle carrying the chief minister was seen entering the palace at 8.25 am.
